The most interesting minute repeater of the year did not come from one of the grand complications houses. It came from Piaget, and it arrived quietly, the way the brand’s best ideas usually do. The new Piaget Polo Minute Repeater (ref. G0A51038) pairs the ultra-thin Manufacture calibre 1290P with the contemporary Polo case for the first time, wrapping the once-record-breaking movement in a cushion-shaped 18K white gold body and a blue guilloche openwork dial that shows off the machinery without shouting about it.

Piaget has been making a habit of this lately: the Polo collection, reworked in 2016, has quietly become the stage for some of the maison’s most ambitious mechanics. But the minute repeater is a different league. The calibres 1209P’s descendant, the 1290P, was the thinnest minute-repeating movement in production when it first appeared in 2013, measuring just 4.8mm. That record eventually fell to Bulgari’s BVL 362, but the Piaget movement remains a masterclass in lateral thinking: spread the components across two slim planes, put the micro-rotor and twin hammers on one level and the racks and governor on the other, and you get a repeater that is both thin and loud — 64 decibels of sound, according to Piaget’s own measurements, which is a fraction louder than most top-tier repeaters.

Piaget Polo Minute Repeater: A Dial That Reveals Without Losing Restraint

The headline novelty is the dial. Unlike the fully transparent dial of the 2013 Emperador Coussin, the Polo uses a partially open-worked 18K gold base with hand guilloche and a sunray finish that only reads as blue until the light catches it. Around the openwork sits a blue “saphir” ring for the hour markers, and the hands are the familiar baton style of the modern Polo. It is a clever balance: you see the gongs, the hammers, the racks doing their work, but there is enough solid dial to give the eye a place to rest. Lume is absent, which is expected at this level — this is a watch meant to be heard, not read in the dark.

Inside beats the calibre 1290P, entirely conceived, developed and finished at Piaget’s Manufacture in La Côte-aux-Fées. The movement is 34.9mm wide, just 4.8mm thick, and made up of 407 components, with 44 jewels, a 21,600 vph (3 Hz) frequency, and 40 hours of power reserve. Winding is automatic via a platinum micro-rotor, which Piaget has used as a signature since the 1960s. The finishing is what you would expect from La Côte-aux-Fées: Geneva stripes, bevels, and a level of detail that rewards a loupe.

A Case That Wears Its Size Well

The Polo case is 48mm wide but only 9.3mm thick, which makes it wear more like a 1970s jumbo than a modern wall clock. The cushion shape, the rhodium-finished white gold, and the integrated-style case lines give it a coherent presence on the wrist. Water resistance is 30 meters — modest, but normal for a minute repeater, since the case needs to resonate rather than seal. The sapphire caseback reveals the hammer side of the movement, and the blue embossed calfskin strap is interchangeable, with a secondary dark blue alligator strap included. The folding buckle is 18K white gold.

This is a numbered, limited-production piece at a rate of roughly five per year, so the Polo Minute Repeater is a halo watch in the truest sense. Pricing is on request — the closely related Emperador Coussin Minute Repeater of 2013 was a quarter-million Swiss francs, and the Polo sits in a similar neighbourhood. The production rate also means the waitlist is the real spec sheet.
