The History of Longines: From Its Beginnings to Modern Excellence

Longines stands as one of horology’s most prestigious names, with a history dating back to 1832 in Saint-Imier, Switzerland. Auguste Agassiz founded the brand, initially as part of a watch trading partnership. This venture evolved into a small-scale production company, relying on local craftsmen to create components that were then assembled into finished timepieces.

By the mid-19th century, the company flourished under the leadership of Agassiz’s nephew, Ernest Francillon. Francillon emerged as a key innovator, recognizing the need to streamline production processes. In 1866, he purchased a plot near the Suze River in Saint-Imier called “Les Longines”—French for “the long meadows.” This name would ultimately become the company’s identity.

Establishment Year and Location

Longines officially registered its trademark in 1867, making it one of the oldest continuously used trademarks today. The Saint-Imier factory became a hub of horological innovation, solidifying the town’s reputation for Swiss watchmaking excellence.

First Watch and Innovations

In 1867, Longines produced its first pocket watch, the “20A.” This timepiece featured a revolutionary crown-winding and setting mechanism. The model’s award at the 1867 Paris Universal Exhibition marked the beginning of Longines’ reputation for innovation.

The early 20th century saw Longines transition from pocket watches to wristwatches, becoming a pioneer in producing timepieces for military and aviation use. A notable early creation was the Weems Second-Setting Watch, designed in collaboration with U.S. Navy officer Philip Van Horn Weems for precise navigation.

Reason for the Brand’s Existence

Longines was established to meet the demand for high-quality timepieces that married technical expertise with aesthetic appeal. Ernest Francillon aimed to create a brand excelling not only in precision but also in luxury and visual allure. This philosophy is encapsulated in Longines’ enduring motto, “Elegance is an Attitude.”

The First Type of Watch

The 20A, Longines’ first watch, was a pocket watch featuring a mechanical movement with an anchor escapement. Its crown-winding feature was revolutionary, eliminating the need for a separate winding key.
