The History of Digital Watch

Reading Time: 4 minutes

The first historically verified digital watch was the Pulsar Time Computer, released in 1972 by Hamilton Watch Company, an American company previously known for innovations in mechanical watches. Hamilton collaborated with Electro/Data Inc., a Texas-based tech company, to develop LED technology that enabled watches to display time in digital format.

At the time, Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology was still new and exclusive. LED required significant power consumption, so the watch was designed to display the time only when a button was pressed, which would light up the screen for a few seconds. This design was quite innovative as it differed from conventional watches that visually displayed time continuously with hands.

Despite being expensive and luxurious, this watch successfully sparked market interest in digital watches. At the time, digital watches were seen as symbols of status and modern technology. However, LED-based watch production was limited due to power consumption challenges and the high cost of LED technology.

The LCD Era: A New Innovation from Seiko

In 1973, just a year after the debut of the Pulsar, Seiko, a Japanese company known for its quality mechanical and quartz watches, developed Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) technology that was far more energy-efficient than LED. Seiko launched its first digital watch, the Seiko Quartz LC V.F.A., with a screen that stayed on without needing a button. The LCD technology used in this watch was revolutionary as it consumed much less battery power than LED, making it more practical for everyday use.

Seiko’s innovation became a milestone in digital watch history as it triggered significant changes in the development of electronic watches. LCD technology quickly became the primary choice for digital watches because it was more energy-efficient and allowed the screen to remain continuously lit. Additionally, the production cost of LCD screens was cheaper than LED, making digital watches more affordable for consumers.

Multifunction Digital Watches and the Introduction of Calculators

In the late 1970s, various brands began experimenting with additional functions on digital watches. One of the biggest innovations of that era was the calculator watch, first introduced by Pulsar and Casio. Calculator watches allowed users to perform basic calculations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, directly from their wrist.

In 1978, Seiko introduced the Seiko Memory Bank, a digital watch with the ability to store simple data. At the time, this was a major advancement, as watches were not only used to display time but also served as information storage devices. Seiko later released another famous model, the Seiko TV Watch in 1982, which allowed users to watch TV on a small screen on the watch. This technology was highly futuristic at the time and even appeared in popular films like James Bond, strengthening Seiko’s image as a leader in innovative technology.

Casio: The Leader in the Digital Watch World

In 1974, Casio, a Japanese electronics company, introduced the Casio Casiotron, its first digital watch with an automatic calendar. The Casiotron became a pioneer in providing additional features on digital watches, such as date calculation, calendar, and even alarms. Casio quickly became a leader in various technological innovations that changed how people used watches. They offered not only time but also other functions that were previously found only in larger electronic devices.

In 1983, Casio introduced the Casio G-Shock, which would become an icon of durability and toughness in the world of digital watches. This watch was designed by Kikuo Ibe, an engineer at Casio, who was inspired to create a watch that wouldn’t easily break even in extreme conditions. The G-Shock was designed with shock-resistant and waterproof technology and was equipped with additional features such as a stopwatch, timer, and calendar. G-Shock became known as a durable, long-lasting watch with universal appeal. This series became a favorite among athletes, adventurers, and military personnel around the world.

Digital Watches as Communication and Health Monitoring Tools

In the 1990s and 2000s, innovations in digital watches advanced further with the introduction of features such as heart rate monitors and calorie counters that allowed users to monitor their health in real-time. Casio, Timex, and several other brands began introducing models that integrated these features, making digital watches practical health tools.

As technology progressed, digital watches began incorporating communication functions. An innovative example was the Samsung Watch Phone launched in 1999, the first watch to allow phone calls. This advancement took digital watches in a more sophisticated direction, making them not only time-telling devices but also communication tools accessible from the wrist.

Influential Brands in the Digital Watch World

Several brands have made significant contributions to the digital watch world, bringing notable changes with their innovations. Here are some of the most influential brands:

  1. Hamilton: As the pioneer of the first digital watch in the world, Hamilton played an important role in introducing the concept of electronic digital watches. Although LED watches were popular only for a short time, this innovation paved the way for further development in digital watches.
  2. Seiko: This Japanese brand is known as a pioneer in LCD technology for digital watches. Seiko also introduced the first digital watch with a television feature, as well as various models equipped with additional functions like data storage. To this day, Seiko remains a leading brand in watch innovation, both mechanical and digital.
  3. Casio: Casio is arguably the most well-known brand in the digital watch world, thanks to its globally popular Casiotron, Databank, and G-Shock series. G-Shock has become a symbol of strength, durability, and multifunctionality in the digital watch industry, making Casio an influential brand. Additionally, the Casio F-91W model, which is very simple and economical, has sold millions of units worldwide and has become an icon of digital watches.
  4. Timex: Although more known for analog watches, Timex also created several digital models that are highly functional and affordable, especially for the American market. The Timex Ironman, with various sports and water-resistant features, has been a popular choice among runners and athletes since its release in 1986.

The Impact of Digital Watches on the Industry

Digital watches have brought significant changes to the watch industry and how people use technology on their wrists. The arrival of digital watches provided a new alternative for users of traditional watches, who were more accustomed to analog mechanisms. Moreover, advancements in digital watches led to the development of modern smartwatches, such as the Apple Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch, which combine digital watch functions with smart technology.

The technology initially introduced by these major brands has evolved to the point where we can see digital watches with various features such as GPS, heart rate sensors, and message and call notifications.

In conclusion, digital watches have come a long way since Hamilton first introduced them in 1972. Innovations from companies like Seiko and Casio have brought digital technology to a more advanced level, making watches not only time-telling devices but also multifunctional tools that support daily activities. This progress has paved the way for the emergence of increasingly sophisticated modern smartwatches, which are the direct successors of the digital watches first developed several decades ago.
